Plot

After renouncing leadership and taking in the remaining Woodbury citizens, Rick has resigned into farming and taking care of pigs, one of which appears sick. Rick also refuses to carry guns, in hopes of being a better example to his son, Carl. The prison has become an ideal and peaceful location for the survivors, who manage to keep walkers from entering. Michonne continues to search for The Governor and plans to search for him next in Macon. While out in the woods to clear snares, Rick finds a tattered woman named Clara and becomes suspicious. Rick converses with her about her life and her husband. At her camp, Clara attempts and fails to kill Rick to feed her zombified husband, and stabs herself to join him as a walker. Daryl leads a small group, including former army medic Bob Stookey and Beth's new boyfriend Zach, on a supply run to a retail store. When Bob causes an accident in the store, walkers pour in from the roof, and Zach is killed when he is bitten by walkers. When the group returns to the prison, Daryl informs Beth of Zach's demise; Beth does not display emotion, saying that she no longer cries and instead decides to be happy she got to know him. Patrick, Carl's friend who has become ill, collapses and dies in the shower rooms, and reanimates as a walker.

Plot

The group has survived the winter with no deaths. Lori is now roughly 8 months pregnant. After several months on the road, the group finds the prison. Rick, Daryl, T-Dog, Glenn and Maggie fight off walkers outside the prison. They decide to move into the prison the next day and try to make the prison into a safe fortress. Lori, thinking Rick hates her and fearful for her unborn child, confides in Hershel. Elsewhere, Michonne, with whom Andrea survived the winter, tends to a feverish Andrea as they seek safer refuge. Rick's group moves into the prison and clears a cell block for the group. Rick continues to show hatred towards Lori. Rick takes T-Dog, Daryl, Glenn, Maggie, and Hershel to clear off more of the prison. They get separated inside the prison. Hershel searches for Glenn and Maggie, and Hershel gets bitten on the lower leg by a walker. They rush Hershel to the prison cafeteria, where Rick amputates the leg at the knee while T-Dog holds off the walkers. Five prison survivors, trapped in the cafeteria and surviving on pantry food, hear the commotion and come to their location.

Plot

The second season begins with Rick and his group of survivors leaving Atlanta. They decide Fort Benning will be their next destination. Along the way, they encounter a traffic jam of abandoned vehicles on I-85. The group loots several vehicles and as a large horde of walkers approaches, is forced to hide under the vehicles. Carol's daughter, Sophia, chased away from the highway by two of the remaining walkers, runs off into the woods. Carl is accidentally shot during a search for the missing girl. The remaining group deals with interpersonal relationships while various searches for Sophia are performed. Otis, a hunter who shot Carl, leads Rick and Shane to a large, isolated farm owned by a veterinarian named Hershel Greene. The remainder of Rick's group moves to the farm while Carl recovers. The group tries to co-exist alongside Hershel's family, but dangerous secrets and disagreements over leadership cause tensions to rise. Daryl leads the initiative to search for Sophia and becomes close to Carol as a result. Glenn builds a romantic relationship with Hershel's daughter Maggie and discovers that Hershel's barn is full of walkers, many of whom in life had been Hershel's friends and relatives. When Shane forces the walkers out of the barn, and the group opens fire, Sophia appears as one of the undead, and Rick shoots her.

Plot

Sheriff's Deputy Rick Grimes is shot and wounded in an altercation with criminals. After slipping into a coma for an indeterminate amount of time, Rick awakens in an abandoned hospital to find a post-apocalyptic world overrun by infectious zombies, colloquially called "walkers". Rick discovers that his wife and son are missing and meets survivors Morgan Jones and his son Duane, who take him in and explain the situation to him. Rick leaves Morgan with a radio in order to keep him updated, as he heavily arms himself from the police station's armory and sets off on a perilous journey for Atlanta, Georgia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is rumored to have set up a quarantined safe zone in the city and Rick believes that his family may be there. However, he soon discovers that the city has been overrun with walkers and is no longer safe. After being rescued from a horde of walkers by Glenn Rhee, Rick meets part of Glenn's group, who had set themselves up in an Atlanta department store. However, walkers attack, forcing them to escape while reluctantly leaving behind Merle Dixon, who had been handcuffed on the roof by Rick due to his unstable and violent behavior.
